EDGARTOWN, Mass. (AP) — President Barack Obama says the civil rights activist Julian Bond was a hero and friend. Obama says he and first lady Michelle Obama have benefited from Bond's example, counsel and friendship. Bond died last night in Florida after a brief illness. He was 75.

ATLANTA (AP) — Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee heads to Israel this week to raise money and meet with officials to discuss the Obama administration's nuclear deal with Iran. The former Arkansas governor announced his trip on CNN's "State of the Union" but didn't say which officials he expects to meet with. Huckabee opposes the Iran deal, saying it would essentially arm a terrorist state.

HICKSVILLE, N.Y. (AP) — A plane crash that killed one person and injured another in New York has also disrupted rail travel on a busy commuter railroad. The single-engine plane crashed onto a railroad crossing in Hicksville this morning, shutting down service on part of the Long Island Rail Road. Officials say the track will be inspected for damage once the plane wreckage is removed.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Winds, drought and hot weather have been stoking wildfires across the West. But crews fighting a wildfire in the Angeles National Forest have managed to increase containment of that blaze to 20 percent. Flames have destroyed several cabins and charred nearly 2 -and-a-half square miles of forest above the suburbs of Glendora and Azusa. A half dozen campgrounds remain evacuated.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — "Straight Outta Compton" has smashed expectations. Universal's N.W.A. biopic charting the formation and rise of the influential rap group is the weekend's top movie after a stunning $56 million debut. The Warner Bros. adaptation of the 1960s television series "The Man From U.N.C.L.E" opened in third place, behind "Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation."
