GLASSBORO, N.J. (AP) — Rowan University has received a $2.55 million federal grant to better prepare New Jersey health care workers to take care of the growing elderly population.
The Record reports (http://bit.ly/1JWN2eJ ) the university runs the New Jersey Institute for Successful Aging, which will lead a new partnership being funded by the three-year grant.
The American Geriatrics Society says New Jersey had 283 certified geriatricians by the end of 2014, which accounts for less than half the number needed to serve an estimated 415,000 elderly residents of the state.
The Health Resources Services Administration grant will pay for more statewide training of health care professionals, home aides and family caregivers.
Funds will help create more "interdisciplinary" courses in medical schools to emphasize teamwork among doctors, nurses and physical therapists in treating the elderly.
