ATLANTA (AP) — Former President Jimmy Carter will have to undergo treatment for cancer. A statement released by the Carter Center says the cancer has spread widely. Further information is expected possibly next week when more about the condition is known. Carter, who is 90, had surgery on Aug. 3 to remove a small mass from his liver. A spokeswoman says Carter's prognosis is excellent for a full recovery.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign is assuring her supporters that the Democratic presidential candidate did not send classified information over her private email account. The statement comes a day after Clinton turned her personal email server over to the Justice Department. A spokeswoman says inquiries into her use of the private account are "designed to do political damage."
WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. air campaign against Islamic State extremists has entered a new phase. American warplanes based at Turkey's Incirlik (IHN'-jur-lihk) air base have carried out airstrikes in Syria. A Pentagon statement doesn't say how many of the F-16's were used or what targets were struck.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — A prayer rally is being held this evening in Arlington, Texas, in connection with Friday's fatal shooting of a black, unarmed 19-year-old by a white rookie officer responding to a burglary call at a car dealership. The host church says the goal is to allow young people to vent and to question city leaders including the police chief. The officer has been fired but protesters also want him prosecuted.
FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — A federal judge has ordered a Kentucky county clerk to issue marriage licenses to same sex-couples. Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis is one of a handful of local elected officials across the country who stopped issuing marriage licenses after the U.S. Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage nationwide in June. She cited her Christian beliefs for refusing.
