SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — After years of debate and study, Utah officials believe that a new state prison should be built west of the Salt Lake City airport. Officials say it's close to existing facilities such as hospitals but could be the most expensive to develop. Gov. Gary Herbert is expected to call lawmakers into a special session as soon as next week this year to consider the move.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Authorities have filed charges against a Layton man accused of beating and choking an ex-girlfriend while holding her in her apartment for 20 hours. The Standard Examiner reports that prosecutors say Benjamin Burnside forced her into her home at knifepoint, demanded drugs and told her she wasn't going to leave him. No attorney was immediately listed for Burnside in court records.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Utah Supreme Court has ruled that a judge erred when dismissing a child sex abuse case more than two years ago. The Salt Lake Tribune reports the court ruled Monday to reverse the dismissal of 10 first-degree felony charges against a now-41-year-old man. Court records show the alleged victim was 21 years old when she testified in 2012 that her mother's ex-boyfriend sexually abused her from 2002 to 2006. The decision sends the case back to district court.
