CHICAGO (AP) — Dawn Clark Netsch, the first woman to hold statewide office in Illinois, bequeathed $5 million to Northwestern University to use for financial aid for students attending the school of law.
Law school Assistant Dean Kirston Fortune says the money also will be used for loan repayment assistance for graduates working in public interest jobs, which tend to pay less than those in the private sector.
Fortune says the great thing about the $5 million bequest is that it allows the law school advance Netsch's legacy of public service.
Netsch graduated from Northwestern Law in 1952 and became the faculty's first female member in 1965. She served in the state senate for 18 years before being elected comptroller in 1990. She lost her 1994 gubernatorial bid.
Netsch died in 2013 at age 86.
