TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — A Tucson woman has been sentenced to seven years in prison for her role in performing liposuction and other surgical procedures without a medical license.
The Arizona Attorney General's Office says Ilda Mirim Garcia didn't have any medical training, education or licensing.
Garcia was arrested along with another defendant in August 2013 after a three-month investigation by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
The two allegedly told patients they were medical professionals authorized to perform liposuction surgeries and other cosmetic procedures.
Authorities say one liposuction patient had a stroke and was in a coma for months.
Garcia pleaded guilty last month to practicing medicine without a license, fraudulent schemes and artifices and aggravated assault causing serious physical injury.
Prosecutors say co-defendant Gustavo Felix Nunez is scheduled for trial early next year.
