GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) — A former co-publisher of The Daily Reflector in Greenville and member of The Associated Press board has died.
The paper reports (http://bit.ly/1UyL877 ) David Jordan Whichard II died Sunday at his home in Grimesland after a battle with cancer. He was 88.
The Greenville native graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He returned to Greenville to become a reporter at The Daily Reflector, the newspaper founded by his grandfather in 1882 and purchased by his father.
Whichard was named editor in 1954 and president in 1965. The paper says he held various positions, including president of the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association, and was an AP board member from 1990 to 1996.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Greenville.
