LAS VEGAS (AP) — A fire official says a passer-by who broke windows at a burning apartment was hospitalized with cuts while firefighters doused flames at a duplex just east of the Las Vegas Strip.
Deputy Clark County Fire Chief Jon Klassen says three people were displaced by damage to two apartments in the fire about 4:45 a.m. Monday on Koval Lane near Tropicana Avenue.
Klassen says the man who tried to help broke glass windows in at least one of the burning units.
The fire official says breaking windows can make things worse by allowing oxygen to reach the fire. Klassen says closed doors and windows can slow the spread of flames.
Traffic was shut down on Koval Lane near the MGM Grand parking structure during the fire.
Damage was estimated at $50,000.
