HONOLULU (AP) — Tropical Storm Guillermo is expected to be downgraded to a tropical depression as it skirts past the Hawaiian Islands. Meanwhile, a new tropical storm has formed far to the east of the state.
The Central Pacific Hurricane Center in Honolulu says Guillermo continues to fall apart Thursday as it tracks north of Hawaii. There are no tropical storm watches in effect for Hawaii, though dangerous surf is still pounding the state.
The National Hurricane Center in Miami says Tropical Storm Hilda has formed in the Pacific and is expected to strengthen over the next 48 hours.
Hilda is about 1,590 miles (2,559 kilometers) east-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii. It is moving west at 13 mph (20 kph).
Forecasters say Hilda is expected to be near hurricane strength by Saturday.
