LINDEN, N.J. (AP) — Traffic on one of the nation's major toll roads could be backed up until the evening rush hour.

A dump truck hit an overpass this morning on the New Jersey Turnpike in Linden, causing a fire and a traffic standstill that lasted for miles.

Police say the fire may have weakened gas and power lines that run under the overpass, as well as the structure itself.

State troopers blocked the road in both directions and removed barriers so vehicles could turn around. Shortly after 1 p.m., the northbound truck lanes were reopened.

Photos posted to social media showed people sunbathing, and throwing around a baseball while they waited for the roadway to reopen.
