CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) — Prosecutors in Colorado begin their final push today to have movie theater shooter James Holmes sentenced to death. On Monday jurors rejected arguments that the former neuroscience graduate student's mental illness means he should not die. The same jury swiftly rejected Holmes' insanity defense, deciding he was capable of telling right from wrong when he carried out the theater attack in the Denver suburb of Aurora on July 20, 2012, that killed 12 people and wounded dozens of others.
SINGAPORE (AP) — Secretary of State John Kerry is calling for countries negotiating a major Pacific Rim trade deal to overcome differences that have prevented them from making progress. Kerry, who's in Singapore, says the so-called "Trans Pacific Partnership" would benefit the people of all nations involved and serve as a model for responsible global industry and commerce. Just days ago, trade ministers failed to bridge final gaps and seal the accord at talks in Hawaii.
WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans say they have the 218 votes needed to disapprove of the Iran nuclear deal. A vote is planned in September on the deal that would curb Tehran's nuclear program in exchange for billions of dollars in sanction relief. Republican Congressman Peter Roskam of Illinois calls the accord a "dangerous agreement." Meanwhile, President Barack Obama is steadily securing the backing of Democrats crucial to ensuring that the deal goes forward.
LANCASTER, N.H. (AP) — Safety officials in New Hampshire are examining a circus tent, trying to determine how it collapsed during a storm early yesterday evening, killing two people and injuring at least 22 others. The tent collapsed during 60 mile-an-hour gusts and hail, as about 100 people stood inside at the Lancaster Fairgrounds, about 90 miles north of Concord.
BEIJING (AP) — Police in China have rescued a newborn baby who was stuck face down in a public toilet in Beijing. She's in stable condition at a hospital in the capital. Chinese state media say police are now trying to identify the baby girl's parents. Unmarried Chinese mothers sometimes abandon newborns because of social stigma associated with out-of-wedlock births. Sometimes parents discard children born with defects.
