LOWER LAKE, Calif. (AP) — Fire officials say a massive blaze raging in the Lower Lake area north of San Francisco spread overnight. Cal Fire says the fast-moving has charred 71 square miles of drought-stricken ground and is threatening 5,000 homes. It is only 5 percent contained. It has already destroyed 24 homes and 26 outbuildings. About 12,000 people have been advised to evacuate.

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (AP) — Five people are in critical condition after a crash in Southern California involving a limousine and two other cars. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department says initial information indicates the limo ran a red light. In all, 11 people were injured in last night's crash in Santa Clarita, about 35 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City police are investigating three shootings overnight that left two people dead and 11 others wounded. Two of the shootings occurred in Brooklyn and one in the Bronx. No arrests have been made.

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — Authorities in Zimbabwe are accusing a second American of killing a lion in an illegal hunt with a bow and arrow. Zimbabwe's National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority says it happened in April. It identifies the hunter as Jan Casimir Seski of Murrysville, Pennsylvania. Minnesota dentist Walter Palmer faces a similar charge in the July killing of a well-known lion named Cecil (SEH'-sihl).

TORONTO (AP) — Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has dissolved the Parliament and set an election for Oct. 19. Harper and his Conservative party hope to win a fourth term after almost a decade in power. Analysts say the election is a toss-up and a minority government is likely no matter what party wins the most seats in Parliament.
