MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — A new course being offered by George Washington University and Saint Anselm College promises to provide insight into both the national political establishment and the day-to-day grassroots campaigning in New Hampshire.

The interactive class on politics and elections during the fall semester will focus on the presidential nominating process. Classrooms on both campuses will be connected via video conferencing technology, and students in Washington also will travel to New Hampshire in October get involved with campaigns.

The new class, developed in partnership with the Bipartisan Policy Center, starts Sept. 3. Democratic strategist James Carville, one of the guest lecturers, said it will be relevant, exciting and timely.

"There is no better moment than the thick of a competitive presidential election to dive into what it takes to get a candidate nominated and elected," he said.

Other New Hampshire colleges and universities also are turning the state's first-in-the-nation primary into a learning experience.

The University of New Hampshire, which has offered a class on the primary for the last several election cycles, also is planning a free online course called "FIRST! Understanding New Hampshire's Presidential Primary" starting in October and running for six weeks.

In January, New England College will host the New Hampshire Primary Student convention in Manchester, providing students from all over the country the chance to meet candidates, elected officials, campaign staff and journalists.
