LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — The outgoing chancellor of the University of Arkansas' Fayetteville campus says he is hopeful that more parents will encourage their children to get a college education.
The university has grown its enrollment from 19,000 to 26,000 in G. David Gearhart's seven years as chancellor at Fayetteville. Still, a low percentage of Arkansas adults have a college degree.
Former Gov. Mike Beebe praised Gearhart's ability to add students while also raising academic standards. Today's students fared better on college entrance exams than freshmen in the 1980s and 1990s.
Gearhart says he is happy to leave for his successor a decision on whether the Razorbacks' football teams will continue to play games in Little Rock, as they have since 1932. The school says it loses money when it plays in central Arkansas.
