ELKO, Nev. (AP) — Federal safety officials are investigating the cause of a fire at a gold mine in northeast Nevada. Authorities say no one was injured in the fire at the Jerritt Canyon Mine about 50 miles north of Elko. But the blaze shut down a high-temperature oven called a "roaster" that process ore at temperatures up to 1,200 degrees.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — A defense lawyer is seeking bail for a former volunteer Las Vegas police Explorer accused of having a relationship with a 14-year-old when he was 18. A judge plans to hold a bail hearing Tuesday for Joshua Honea, who's now 22. He faces child sex assault and kidnapping charges but prosecutors say more may be added.
GARDNERVILLE, Nev. (AP) — A man is dead after a standoff with Douglas County sheriff's deputies at his Gardnerville home. Deputies were responding to reports that 48-year-old Mark Perkins had threatened to kill a neighbor and shoot his wife. Deputies opened fire after deputies say he came outside and pointed two weapons at them.
SPARKS, Nev. (AP) — Medical marijuana is being legally sold in Nevada for the first time since voters legalized it 15 years ago. People lined up outside the Silver State Relief dispensary in Sparks early Friday. Voters approved medicinal marijuana in 2000, but the measure lacked language to establish a system to sell or distribute the drug until just recently.
