This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

Karma is considered to be the invisible power balancing the universe, an energy that links us all together. Roma Obaid is a believer in the philosophy and wanted it to be her guiding principle when creating her restaurant, Karma Indian Cuisine in Sandy, which opened a year ago.

Roma discovered her passion at the young age of 9 when she first started cooking. While her friends were out playing, she was studying the food of her native India and learning how to bring out its best. She's spent her life perfecting her art, studying with both her grandfather, who was a chef, and her mother, known as a great cook. With two of her daughters involved with Karma, this is now a fourth generation family art. She's sharing her lifetime of study with customers of Karma Indian Cuisine.

Roma is fulfilled by offering only the highest quality ingredients for the dishes she makes at Karma Indian Cuisine. She works to use fair trade spices and organic and local produce when she can. Everything starts fresh daily, meaning they have no walk-in cooler, because they want only the best for their customers. She's also carved her own niche through offering many menu items that are vegan and gluten free to serve a wide customer base and special dietary needs.

Roma's expertise at mastering her craft speaks for itself since Karma won Best of State for Indian Cuisine in 2015. Some of the most popular items here include the Bombay Fries, spiced shoestring potatoes with cilantro and lemon or the Shahi chicken or lamb cooked with cream cheese, spices, bell peppers and onion, one of Roma's original recipes. There are also Indian dishes like Chicken Tikka Masala, Coconut Kurma and traditional curries. The focus is on Northern India and Pakistan style of food. The restaurant is only open for dinner from 5 to 9:30 p.m., so customers know to get there early.
