ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Lead negotiators from the European Union and International Monetary Fund have begun an intensive round of talks with Greece to hammer out details of a third international bailout worth some 85 billion euros ($93 billion). The envoys held a first meeting with Greek Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos (sah-kah-LAH'-tos). The bailout talks must be concluded before Aug. 20, when a debt repayment to the European Central Bank worth more than 3 billion euros is due.

SAINT-ANDRE, Reunion (AP) — Australia's foreign minister says giving closure to the families who lost loved ones on Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 is the most important part of identifying the source of a barnacle-encrusted wing part. Several officials say they're confident the debris found on a remote French island in the Indian Ocean is from a Boeing 777. But French authorities are planning to send the piece to southern France for analysis before confirming it came from the missing Malaysian aircraft. The flight disappeared in March 2014 on its way to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur.

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) — A female suicide bomber killed many people at a crowded market early today in the northeastern Nigerian city of Maiduguri. At least one trader blames the explosion on Boko Haram Islamic extremists. There's no exact toll from the carnage at Gamboru wholesale vegetable market. Rescuers are still recovering bodies.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — One of the most "trusted" associates of the late Mullah Mohammad Omar has succeeded him. In a statement, the Afghanistan Taliban says the new leader, Mullah Mohammad Akhtar Mansoor, has also been given the title of "Commander of the Faithful," conferring on him the supreme status held by Mullah Omar. The Taliban on Thursday confirmed that Mullah Omar died of an illness some time ago.

ATLANTA (AP) — Surveillance cameras have caught images of two white men laying Confederate battle flags on the ground near the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s church, but it's not clear if the men committed a crime. Atlanta police Chief George Turner says his officers are working with federal authorities. He says a hate crime hasn't been ruled out, although Georgia has no state hate crimes law.
