KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Some relatives of the 239 people who were on the Malaysia Airlines flight that disappeared more than a year ago say they want authorities to be 100 percent certain that a plane part found on the Indian Ocean island of Reunion is from the plane. Investigators say the wing part comes from a Boeing 777. Malaysia Airlines 370 is the only Boeing 777 that's missing. Jacquita Gomes, whose husband was on the flight, says she wants to put her husband to rest, but part of her doesn't want the news to be true.
CINCINNATI (AP) — A University of Cincinnati police officer charged in the traffic stop fatal shooting of a motorist is scheduled to appear in court today. Officer Ray Tensing was fired shortly after yesterday's indictment. Authorities say on July 19, Tensing pulled over 43-year-old Samuel DuBose for not having a front license plate. Through his attorney, Tensing claims he fired at DuBose because he thought he was going to be dragged under the car and feared for his life. The prosecutor has scoffed at that claim. The traffic stop was recorded by police bodycam.
MULTAN, Pakistan (AP) — One of Pakistan's most feared Islamic militant leaders has been buried amid tight security. Pakistani police say hundreds of people attended the funeral of Malik Ishaq early today in central Pakistan. Ishaq directed the operations of a group (Lashkar-e-Jhangvi) linked to the Taliban and to al-Qaida, and allegedly masterminded the killing of scores of minority Shiites. He was gunned down with 13 other militants, including his two sons, in a Wednesday assault on a police convoy that was transporting him from prison.
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) — A 15-year-old boy charged with the murder of an 8-year-old neighbor in their Santa Cruz, California artist community is scheduled to appear in court today. Police say Adrian Jerry Gonzalez lured Madyson Middleton into his family's apartment from a courtyard where she had been riding her scooter over the weekend. Once inside, he allegedly tied her up, sexually assaulted and killed her.
GOLETA, Calif. (AP) — California beachgoers are being told to avoid tar balls along the Santa Barbara shoreline as the Coast Guard tries to track down the source of a mysterious miles-long oil slick that floated up 1,000 yards from the sand. Authorities say the three-mile sheen is harmless to people and beaches remain open. But health officials are telling people to avoid contact with the oil, which is expected to gradually disperse.
