KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Afghanistan's main intelligence agency says the reclusive Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar is dead -- and in fact, has been dead for more than two years. A spokesman for the agency says Mullah Omar died in a hospital in the Pakistani city of Karachi in April 2013. The confirmation comes two days before the Afghan government and the Taliban are to hold their second round of official peace talks in Pakistan.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Pennsylvania Congressman Chaka Fattah (SHAW'-kah fa-TAH') has been indicted on charges he misappropriated hundreds of thousands of dollars of federal, charitable and campaign funds. The 11-term Philadelphia Democrat was charged today with racketeering conspiracy, bribery and other charges. He's been the subject of a long-running federal investigation. Four others also have been charged, including people who worked for his campaign and congressional staffs.

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) — The father of Colorado theater shooter James Holmes is back on the stand in the sentencing phase of his son's trial. Robert Holmes is testifying for a second day in an effort to spare his son's life. He says he's seen James Holmes in jail only three times because his son typically doesn't allow visitors. Robert Holmes says during his first visit, his son "was clearly really messed up," with his eyes bulging and his pupils dilated.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Tom Brady is vowing to fight his four-game suspension for the scandal known as "Deflategate." The New England Patriots quarterback writes in a Facebook post that he did nothing wrong, and neither did anyone in the Patriots organization. He also denies destroying his cellphone to keep it out of the hands of investigators. The team's coach, meanwhile, says the suspension won't affect preparations for the upcoming season.

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — A wildfire east of California's Napa Valley has now charred more than 11 square miles. The flames jumped a containment line in rugged, steeped terrain that was baking in triple digit temperatures. At least 136 structures are still threatened. And more than 200 people are still under mandatory evacuation orders.
