TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (AP) — Fire officials say two 10-year-old kids have been charged with starting a Taylorsville apartment building fire that displaced 20 people. A Unified Fire spokesman says the boy and girl face one count each of aggravated arson. KUTV in Salt Lake City reports that they and the girl's 8-year-old sister were playing with lighters in a tree before the fire broke out.

MIDVALE, Utah (AP) — A Midvale school that was already scheduled for demolition is now a loss because of a fire. KSL-TV in Salt Lake City reports that crews responded to a blaze at Midvale Middle School and flames could be seen billowing from the abandoned building. The fire was contained in about 30 minutes. Investigators have not determined the cause of the fire but are not ruling out arson.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Researchers are gathering hundreds of water and soil samples, surveying plants and gauging stream flows as part of a study of the Red Butte Creek that is funded by a $20 million grant from the National Science Foundation. A University of Utah researcher says the survey will help scientists understand the relationship among landscaping, runoff, water use and the mountains.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — For decades, forest rangers in wooden towers across the West scanned the horizon with binoculars for smoke that could signal the start of a wildfire. Now, scientists in Nevada and California are helping federal land managers develop technology to expand a network of high-definition cameras to do the job, including one in northern Nevada that recently captured a blaze in real-time more than 100 miles away in Oregon.
