LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — Louisiana authorities know how he carried out Thursday night's shooting at a movie theater in Lafayette, but now they're looking for possible motives. Police say John Russell Houser had planned to escape but fatally shot himself after officers responded quickly. He killed two people and wounded nine others with a handgun he bought at an Alabama pawnshop last year. His troubled past includes mental health issues, domestic violence and advocating right-wing extremism.
HEMPSTEAD, Texas (AP) — A black woman found dead in a Southeast Texas jail three days after a traffic-stop confrontation with a white officer will be laid to rest near Chicago on Saturday. Authorities in Waller County say Sandra Bland hanged herself with a plastic bag. She was pulled over for not giving signal prior to a lane change. Part of a heated exchange between Bland and the trooper was captured on dashcam video. Investigations are continuing.
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkey says three of its warplanes have struck Islamic State targets near the Turkish border in Syria. Friday's targets are said to have included two command centers and a gathering point. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said nine IS militants were killed in the raids.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Des Moines Register says its reporters have been denied credentials for a Saturday Donald Trump campaign event in Iowa. The state's largest newspaper says Trump's campaign manager says the ban is because of a Tuesday editorial that called Trump a "feckless blowhard" who is "unfit to hold office."
ATLANTA (AP) — A historically black college in Atlanta is cutting ties to Bill Cosby, who along with his wife donated $20 million to Spelman College in 1988. Spelman suspended its endowed professorship with Cosby last year. The parting of ways follows the emergence of details in a sexual-assault lawsuit. Cosby said in a recently released deposition that he got sedatives to give to women before sex.
