LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — Police in Lafayette, Louisiana, say the gunman who killed two people at a movie theater last night bought the handgun he used at an Alabama pawnshop in 2014. Chief Jim Craft says he was told by federal officials that the purchase was legal. Authorities say John Russell Houser may have intended to shoot others but killed himself after encountering the officers who responded rapidly. Investigators are talking to Houser's acquaintances and pouring through online posts to determine a motive.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Prosecutors have filed murder charges against a Northern California man accused of shooting and killing a police sergeant during a traffic stop. The complaint charges Mark Estrada with murder of a peace officer, Hayward police Sgt. Scott Lunger.

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkish news reports say that for the second straight night, Turkish jets have struck Islamic State group targets across the border in Syria. The fighter jets also hit camps of Kurdish PKK militants in northern Iraq. It's the first time Turkey has struck Kurds in northern Iraq since a peace deal between Ankara and the rebel group was announced in 2013.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — A federal judge in Mexico has opened a court proceeding against three prison employees on charges they aided in the escape of drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman. He broke out of a maximum security prison through a mile-long tunnel earlier this month.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Authorities say a Utah ambulance crashed today after a psychiatric patient grabbed the steering wheel, injuring two medical workers and the man getting treatment. The Utah Highway Patrol says the driver lost control when the male patient got a hold of the wheel on Interstate 15. The ambulance transporting the man crashed and rolled. All three people are listed in fair condition.
