CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) — The FBI is providing new details of last week's deadly shootings at a military facility in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Special agent Ed Reinhold says a service member opened fire on the gunman when he crashed a car through the gates. The gunman went inside the building and shot a service member, then continued shooting as he made his way through the building and out the back, where he shot two more people. Four Marines and a sailor were fatally shot before police killed the gunman.
HEMPSTEAD, Texas (AP) — The Texas Department of Public Safety says the patrol car video showing the arrest of a black motorist who was later found dead in her jail cell wasn't edited or manipulated. But officials say glitches occurred when the video was uploaded for public viewing, so it will be reposted. The video released yesterday shows a white trooper trying to remove Sandra Bland from her car after a minor traffic infraction. She was found dead July 13 in a jail in Hempstead. Authorities say she hanged herself but her family disputes that.
DETROIT (AP) — Fiat Chrysler says it has a software fix that will prevent future hacking into the Jeep Cherokee and other vehicles. The fix is a response to a recent article in Wired magazine about two hackers who remotely took control of a Jeep Cherokee's speed, brakes and other features. The automaker says it doesn't know of any real-world hacking incidents targeting its vehicles. Owners can download the software from the company's website and install it on their vehicles, or ask a dealer to install it.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The University of California says it will raise the minimum wage for its employees and contract workers to $15 an hour by fall 2017. University President Janet Napolitano says it will be the nation's first public university system to set its own base hourly wage. Hourly workers currently make the state minimum of $9. The wage will increase to $13 an hour in October for employees who work at least 20 hours a week and go up a dollar in each of the next two years.
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A university in Connecticut says when a student told a professor about rigging a drone with a handgun, the professor told him it was a terrible idea. A spokesman for Central Connecticut State University says the engineering professor strongly discouraged the student, who later posted a video online showing shots being fired from a drone in a wooded area. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating whether the 18-year-old student violated its regulations.
