TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — A $350,000, custom-made research vessel owned by the University of Toledo was dedicated Thursday at the National Museum of the Great Lakes along the Maumee River.
The Blade newspaper reports (http://bit.ly/1J3Q802 ) the 28-foot boat is being used by researchers at the university's Lake Erie Center to collect samples and information about Toledo's drinking water supply.
The university's older 25-foot vessel will remain in use, but officials say the new boat has more to offer.
The new boat provides a heated, enclosed cabin that allows researchers to work in less-than-ideal weather. It also features electrical power to plug in laptops, lab stations, more desk space, radar and GPS systems.
University President Sharon Gaber says the school can help solve issues of contamination at the lake with the new boat.
