FLAT GAP, Ky. (AP) — Cadaver dogs are helping in the search for people still missing following flooding this week in rural eastern Kentucky. Three people have been confirmed dead, but another five are still missing. Among the dead is 74-year-old Willa Mae Pennington, whose 34-year-old grandson, Scott Johnson, was trying to get her to safety. The two were swept away while wading through rushing floodwater, and Johnson still has not been found.
WASHINGTON (AP) — A day after meeting in private with House Democrats, Vice President Joe Biden returns to Capitol Hill today to pitch the Iran nuclear deal to Democrats on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Resistance in Congress is not only coming from Republicans, but also from President Barack Obama's own Democratic Party. In a news conference yesterday, Obama said, "Either the issue of Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon is resolved diplomatically through a negotiation or it's resolved through force, through war."
WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans are making another push to pass legislation designed to bring more water to California's dry farm belt. Similar efforts failed in the past two congressional sessions after the bills made it through the House. California is in the midst of a four-year drought that has forced communities throughout the state to cut water use. A bill by Republican Congressman David Valadao would siphon more water for the farm belt and set deadlines for completing feasibility studies to build or enlarge several dams.
HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) — A Texas death row inmate is scheduled to be put to death tonight for killing a woman during a robbery 10 years ago. Clifton Lamar Williams was convicted of beating and stabbing 93-year-old Cecelia Schneider, and then setting her body on fire. The U.S. Supreme Court refused in April to review Williams' case. But yesterday, the 31-year-old man's attorney asked the Texas courts for at least a 60-day delay.
NEW YORK (AP) — Taxis are losing business travelers to ride-hailing services like Uber. A survey by expense management system provider Certify says that from April through June, Uber overtook taxis as the most expensed form of ground transportation. Certify CEO Robert Neveu says, "Established travel providers will need to adapt quickly or face further market share erosion to the sharing economy." Uber connects travelers with various cars through its smartphone app.
