HONOLULU (AP) — A tropical depression could be coming toward Hawaii. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports that the system cropped up yesterday and could become Tropical Storm Ela today if it strengthens. It was about 960 miles away from Hilo last night.

JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. (AP) — The U.S. Army says it's moving its western medical headquarters from Washington state to Hawaii. The Western Regional Medical Command at Joint Base Lewis-McChord has about 165 employees. The News Tribune says a two-star general position will be relocated to Honolulu, home of the Army's Pacific headquarters.

WAILUKU, Hawaii (AP) — A state lawmaker from south Maui plans to draft a bill for the next legislative session to appease both residents who oppose the burning of cane fields and the company that burns them. The Maui News reports that Rep. Kaniela Ing says he will propose a bill that will provide incentives for Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co.

HILO, Hawaii (AP) — Researchers with the University of Hawaii are looking to more than double the number of geothermal energy survey sites they originally intended to study. The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports UH-Hilo got permits in March to begin looking at geothermal energy under the dormant Hualalai volcano.
