SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A judge has refused to release a $100,000 cash bail posted by the Saudi Arabian consulate in a Utah rape case involving an exchange student.
The Daily Herald newspaper in Provo reports that (http://bit.ly/1HMZDkZ) Judge Derek Pullan upheld a bail forfeiture order Tuesday in the case of 27-year-old Monsour Alshammari, who is accused of trying to flee to Mexico.
The college student was bailed out by the Saudi Arabian consulate in March, and the money was forfeited when he was arrested at the border and missed a court appearance.
Defense attorney Ron Yengich argued Alshammari only missed the hearing because he was in custody, but the judge disagreed.
Alshammari is accused of assaulting a woman at his Orem apartment in February. He denied the allegation to police.
He is due back in court Aug. 4.
