CORNISH, N.H. (AP) — A western New Hampshire school district is trying to replace nearly half its teaching staff after eight full- and part-time resignations last month.
The Valley News reports (http://bit.ly/1UbU0Ar) the School Administrative Unit 6 in Claremont listed 71 openings on its website Wednesday for seven schools and administrative operations.
Superintendent Middleton McGoodwin says he was not surprised by the number of resignations in general, citing declining enrollment, increasing costs and demands from taxpayers to lower district cost-per-pupil spending.
He says about 90 students are expected in Cornish Elementary School for the upcoming school year — about 40 percent less than the past decade.
A committee of residents is examining whether to recommend to the School Board that Cornish leave the district.
