FLINT, Mich. (AP) — The Flint School District plans to lay off 55 teachers before classes start in the fall.

The Flint Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1GBsi5M ) officials are working to determine which teachers won't have jobs and the school board heard about the issue Thursday.

With the reduction of 55 positions, plus 16 retirements since January, the district is expected to save $5.8 million.

By the end of this school year, officials say the cash-strapped district must cut its deficit from $21.9 million to roughly $16 million. The deficit-cutting plan includes concessions from teachers, wage freezes and closing and consolidating school buildings.
