SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A San Juan County commissioner convicted in an ATV ride protesting federal control of public lands won't get state money to help with legal bills. But Utah officials say they'll spend their own money to help pay Phil Lyman's bills. A request for Utah's Constitutional Defense Council to help Lyman was withdrawn yesterday after state attorneys told the council that Utah would likely face a lawsuit for helping out.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah County doctor convicted of killing his wife is appealing. Lawyers for Martin MacNeill argue that the jury never heard evidence that key testimony from a former cellmate was tainted. Prosecutors were not immediately available for comment.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Dr. David Patton, the executive director of Utah's health department for the past four years, is stepping down this summer to work in the private sector. Patton will stay on at the health department through July the governor's office will conduct a nationwide search for his replacement.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Federal water managers let the closely watched and regulated surface level at Lake Mead go to a new record low overnight, before guiding it back above a crucial drought shortage trigger point. A U.S. Bureau of Reclamation spokeswoman says the lake level will rise by the end of the year to about 1,081 feet. That's 6 feet above the trigger point that would require a percentage cut in water supplies to Arizona and Nevada.
