BOSTON (AP) — A federal judge has formally sentenced Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (joh-HAHR' tsahr-NEYE'-ehv) to death for the 2013 terror attacks. U.S. District Judge George O'Toole says no one will remember that Tsarnaev's teachers or friends were fond of him. He says what they will remember is that Tsarnaev "murdered and maimed innocent people" and "did it willfully and intentionally." Tsarnaev looked down and rubbed his hands together as the judge sentenced him.
BOSTON (AP) — For the first time, the surviving Boston Marathon bomber has apologized publicly. Speaking in court before he was formally sentenced today, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (joh-HAHR' tsahr-NEYE'-ehv) said he's sorry for the irreparable harm he's caused and that he prays for the victims. He said he listened to everyone who spoke on the witness stand and he noted the strength, patience and dignity of the survivors. Earlier, Tsarnaev offered thanks to his attorneys -- and to Allah.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana says he's entering the 2016 presidential race. And he's already trying to distinguish himself in a field packed with better known rivals. Jindal's chances will depend in large measure on his continued courtship of evangelical voters. But several other contenders also are determined to win over that group. His announcement came on his website, hours ahead of a kickoff rally. Aides discussed Jindal's plans to focus on social conservatives and to highlight his reputation as a policy-seasoned leader.
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is defending the timing of today's ceremony to sign two bills that loosen the state's gun laws. He says it was scheduled before nine people were shot and killed last week in a South Carolina church. Walker also says pulling back on today's ceremony would have given people what he calls "the erroneous opinion" that the measures "had anything to do with what happened in Charleston." One bill eliminates the state's 48-hour waiting period for handgun purchases. The other allows retired officers to carry guns on school property.
CADYVILLE, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities searching 75 square miles of rugged northern New York terrain for two escaped murderers say they still don't' know for sure if the convicts are armed. They say weapons and ammunition are typically stored in many of the hunting camps dotting the area near the Canadian border, but not everyone keeps an inventory of their firearms.
