(AP) — Inmates David Sweat and Richard Matt continue to evade detection and capture despite unconfirmed reports that the convicted killers who escaped a maximum security prison have been seen in various areas. Authorities say the primary search area is still near the northern New York prison near the Canadian border. But sighting reports as far as 350 miles away are being investigated too.
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — An Interior Ministry spokesman says members of Afghanistan's parliament are safe and a Taliban assault on the building has been repelled. A suicide car bomber hit near the entrance and gunmen battled security forces before taking refuge in a nearby building under construction. Officials say Afghan forces surrounded the building and killed all seven attackers.
BRUSSELS (AP) — No details have emerged yet concerning Greece's latest bailout proposal to the 19-member eurozone. Leaders of the 19-nation eurozone are gathering in Brussels for a last-ditch summit aimed at clinching a deal as a major debt payment deadline looms June 30. Default could force Greece off the common euro currency. Any proposals must be vetted by technical experts to ascertain whether they are viable.
KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) — The southern port city of Karachi, Pakistan is in the grip of a deadly heatwave. Pakistani officials say more than 100 people have died from heatstroke in the last two days. A hospital spokeswoman says hundreds more people have been admitted with heat-related ailments, including fever and dehydration. Temperatures have soared to 113 degrees Fahrenheit.
LUXEMBOURG (AP) — The European Union is moving to put a stop to seafaring human traffickers. An EU naval operation seeks to stem the flow of migrants in unseaworthy boats across the Mediterranean to Europe. More than 100,000 migrants have entered Europe so far this year, with some 2,000 dead or missing during their perilous quest. So far, the operation is limited to international waters.
