FRIENDSHIP, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities are still searching near the prison for two convicted killers who escaped the facility in northern New York near the Canadian border, but possible sightings have state police focused miles to the south today. New York State Police spokesman Beau Duffy says officers are investigating a possible sighting of the prisoners in Allegany County near the Pennsylvania border, 350 miles from the prison.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Police in New Orleans are doing the tough legwork in their search for a man suspected of killing another officer, canvassing a New Orleans neighborhood, which is tense at the sight of body-armored officers with powerful rifles. Police say Travis Boys was being transferred to jail when he somehow got loose, climbed into the front seat and shot officer Daryle Holloway.
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Recovery and healing are likely to be major themes today as Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church welcomes the public into its sanctuary for Sunday worship following a shooting on Wednesday that killed nine people. Events to show solidarity are planned throughout Charleston, South Carolina, and beyond, including the synchronized ringing of church bells at 10 a.m. EDT. Gov. Nikki Haley and her family were to attend the service at Emanuel.
WASHINGTON (AP) — A published report says the Department of Veterans Affairs has not only been unable to solve the problem of long waiting lists of vets seeking health care, it's gotten worse. The New York Times reports the number of veterans ending up on waiting lists of one month or more is 50 percent higher now than it was a year ago when a scandal broke over false records and long wait times.
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — A bill passed by Iran's parliament could complicate nuclear negotiations with six world powers. The lawmakers voted to ban access to military sites and scientists as part of a future deal with world powers over its contested nuclear program. Of 213 lawmakers attending an open session of the parliament today, 199 voted for the bill that also requires the complete lifting of all sanctions.
