CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — A childhood friend of the suspect in the South Carolina church massacre says Dylann Roof railed about black people and remarked that he had "a plan." Nine people at Charleston's Emanuel AME church were killed. Roof was arrested without incident Thursday in Shelby, North Carolina, about a four-hour drive from Charleston. He waived extradition and was taken by plane back to South Carolina, where he faces a bond hearing.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Marshals Service has added the two escaped killers from a New York prison to its Most Wanted Fugitives List. Convicted murderers David Sweat and Richard Matt were reported missing June 6. Meanwhile, a lawyer says prisoner staffer Lyle Mitchell was "blown away" that his wife Joyce allegedly discussed having the two inmates kill him. She's charged with helping the escapees.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Jury deliberations are set to continue Friday in Oklahoma City in the trial of a man charged with sexually abusing children at a Kenyan orphanage. Matthew Lane Durham is accused of 17 counts of sexual misconduct with children. Prosecutors allege that Durham targeted orphans while serving as a volunteer at a children's home in Nairobi, Kenya, between April and June 2014.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon has declared a state of emergency because of flooding generated by a tropical depression moving through the region. The storm came ashore in Texas on Tuesday as Tropical Storm Bill. Heavy rain is expected through Friday night. Both the Missouri and Mississippi rivers are swollen.

PHOENIX (AP) — Even by Arizona standards it's sizzling in Phoenix. Forecasters have predicted the mercury will hit 115 degrees on Friday, which would be the eleventh day in a row that the temperature reached 110 degrees or higher. Other Arizona cities are broiling as well, with Yuma expected to see even higher temperatures than Phoenix.
