WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is hoping an alliance with top Republicans in Congress will help him get the enhanced negotiating authority he wants to complete a trade deal with Pacific Rim countries. Many Democrats backed by unions have blocked the legislation. Officials say the GOP-led House will vote Thursday on a stand-alone bill to give Obama the authority he needs.
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (AP) — Police in New York are expanding the manhunt for two killers beyond a 16-square-mile area of woods, fields and swamps near the maximum-security prison they broke out of. Authorities say they have "no hard evidence" that the men were able to leave the area. But they caution the lack of evidence doesn't mean they are somewhere near the upstate prison.
BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — The balcony collapse that killed six college students in California appears to have been caused by rotted wooden beams, That's according to Berkeley's mayor who says investigators think the wood wasn't caulked and sealed properly at the time of construction and was damaged by moisture. Most of the victims were Irish and their relatives are now arriving in the U.S.
DALLAS (AP) — Heavy rainfall from a tropical depression is still predicted in north Texas and southeast Oklahoma. Forecasters say a corridor of heavy rainfall about 75 miles wide is expected to dump the heaviest amount of rain in those areas tonight with concerns of road closures and possible flooding. But a band of dry air is holding off some of the rain from Tropical Depression Bill.
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Florida authorities say a shark bit the calf of a 10-year-old boy, but he received only minor injuries and was treated at the scene. The Georgia boy was bitten near Daytona Beach Shores. Two young people were seriously injured in separate shark attacks in North Carolina on Sunday: They both lost limbs but are recovering.
