BENGHAZI, Libya (AP) — An Islamist with links to extremists in Libya says a U.S. airstrike in the eastern part of the country that Americans believe hit an al-Qaida-linked extremist likely missed him and killed others. The Islamist, who wants to remain anonymous, says Mokhtar Belmokhtar was not at the site of the U.S. airstrike this weekend. Belmokhtar is charged with leading the attack on a gas plant in Algeria in 2013 that killed at least 35 hostages, including three Americans.
DALLAS (AP) — The family of a man linked to a violent assault on Dallas police headquarters was accused two years earlier of choking his mother, then fleeing to an East Texas town where schools were locked down out of fear he would attack them as "soft targets." Police say the man who on Saturday planted pipe bombs outside Dallas police headquarters and fired at officers from his armored van, told them he was James Boulware. He was killed hours later by a police sniper.
DANNEMORA, N.Y. (AP) — A prosecutor says the two convicted killers who cut their way out of a maximum security prison in upstate New York apparently used tools routinely stored at the prison by contractors, but they took care to return them to their toolboxes after each night's work so that no one would notice. Prosecutors say that Joyce Mitchell, the prison tailoring shop instructor, had agreed to pick up the prisoners right after their escape, but she backed out at the last minute because she still loved her husband and felt guilty for participating. Mitchell has been criminally charged.
ACAPULCO, Mexico (AP) — Officials in Mexico have ordered schools closed Monday and prepared shelters along the southwestern coast. Tropical Storm Carlos was downgraded from a hurricane Sunday, but it regained some strength later in the day. Late Sunday, the storm was centered 95 miles west of Acapulco, and the National Hurricane Center in Miami says it has top sustained winds of 70 mph.
CUERO, Texas (AP) — A natural gas pipeline has ruptured in rural DeWitt County in southern Texas, creating a massive fire. A spokeswoman for Texas-based Energy Transfer Partners says the rupture happened around 8 p.m. Sunday and that seven homes have been evacuated as a precaution. She says the gas has been rerouted from the line and the fire is burning itself out.
