GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) — Colorado's education board chairwoman is resigning for health reasons and calling the group dysfunctional, saying partisan bickering has made it difficult to continue in her role.
Colorado State Board of Education Chairwoman Marcia Neal was about to retire last year when Republicans concerned about losing the general election for the board seat encouraged her to run.
Neal said Republicans and Democrats on the seven-member board are focused on squabbling rather than talking about how to support student learning, the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel reported (http://bit.ly/1GytcnV ).
"Under the leadership of Commissioner Robert Hammond, we shared a commitment of support for individual schools and districts," Neal wrote in her resignation letter. "No more! Sadly, our current board has become dysfunctional."
Neal said her resignation will be effective July 31.
Neal was elected chairwoman of the Colorado State Board of Education on Jan. 7, 2015. She has served as a member of the board for the 3rd Congressional District since January 2009, and she began her second term on the board on Jan. 7, 2015.
The resignation means a Republican vacancy committee in the 3rd Congressional District will select Neal's replacement on the board.
