SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Longtime Salt Lake City police chief Chris Burbank says he was forced to resign by the mayor for the way he handled a sexual harassment claim. Burbank said he submitted his resignation after being told he would need to read a prewritten apology to avoid being fired. Burbank defended his handling of the claims. He says Salt Lake City mayor Ralph Becker decision is election-year politics.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah man has been sentenced to 27 months in federal prison in what authorities say was a plot to blow up a police station, kill officers and trigger an anti-government uprising. A lawyer for John Huggins disputed that during his sentencing hearing in Salt Lake City, saying the 48-year-old wouldn't have carried out any violence. The lawyer says Huggins was encouraged by an unreliable police informant.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A man is in police custody after a van was found ablaze on the southwest side of downtown Salt Lake City. The man, whose name has not been released, is accused of dousing the minivan in gasoline and setting it on fire. The man taken into custody was first taken to a hospital for medical issues that were not related to the fire.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A flash flood watch remains in effect across much of central and southern Utah, and the National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning at the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument on the Arizona line. More than an inch of rain also was recorded by early yesterday at Bryce Canyon.
