TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Legislation inspired after Rutgers University used student activities fees to pay Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi for an appearance in 2011 has passed a state Senate committee.

The New Jersey Senate's Higher Education Committee passed a bill Thursday that would require public higher-education institutions to publish a breakdown of students' fees online.

The legislation also calls for allowing students to opt out of some entertainment fees.

The measure stretches back to an appearance at Rutgers by the former star of MTV's "Jersey Shore." The university paid Polizzi $32,000.

State Sen. Joe Kyrillos says college students and their parents should know exactly where fees are going before their money is collected.
