RENO, Nev. (AP) — Thousands of pet owners near Reno are going to need a new place to take their dogs to run them off-leash as parks officials close a popular 25-acre pasture for the summer amid drought concerns.
The Reno Gazette Journal reports (http://on.rgj.com/1BU5a1i) officials expect the Rancho San Rafael Regional Park's irrigation water source to be cut off any day by decreasing water levels in the Truckee River.
The county-owned land has been used as a dog park since 2001, and peak days can see between 500 and 800 visitors.
Washoe County Regional Parks and Open Space district manager Andy Mink says long-term damage is likely if dogs are allowed to continue to use the pasture after it goes dormant this summer.
