WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — Beau Biden is being remembered as a man who lived his life working to serve others. The former Delaware attorney general and son of Vice President Joe Biden died a week ago of brain cancer at age 46. Among those speaking at his funeral in Wilmington, Delaware, today was Gen. Ray Odierno, the former top U.S. commander in Iraq, where Biden once served. Odierno described Beau Biden as a dedicated soldier and selfless friend who he thought might one day lead the country.
DENVER (AP) — Cleanup efforts have been underway in Colorado and Wyoming today after violent storms that have brought flooding, tornadoes and damaging hail over the past few days. But forecasters are warning conditions are unstable, and the region is likely to see more storms. The National Weather Service says the nasty weather is expected to extend into Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa with the highest potential for severe storms in eastern Nebraska and western Iowa.
GARLAND CITY, Ark. (AP) — The 242 residents of Garland City in southwest Arkansas are returning to their homes as waters of the flooded Red River recede. Officials issued an evacuation order yesterday when floodwaters threatened to undermine a levee. But the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has inspected the levee and found it to be sound. Heavy rains in Texas and Oklahoma in recent weeks triggered sharp rises on the Red River.
MILPITAS, Calif. (AP) — A Northern California bus driver who spotted a 3-year-old boy and his kidnapper on his bus and alerted police is being hailed as a hero. The San Francisco Chronicle reports Tim Watson spotted the boy after hearing he'd been kidnapped from the Milpitas (mihl-PEE'-tuhs) Public Library. He stopped the bus, announced he was looking for a missing backpack and casually looked at the boy's shoes, which were red, just like the ones the missing boy was described as wearing.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) — Staff at Denali National Park in Alaska are warning visitors to be especially careful around wildlife after a cow moose with two calves injured at least two visitors in the past 10 days. The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports that one woman was hurt badly enough to be sent to the hospital for treatment. She had been taking pictures of the moose when the animal charged the crowd, bashing the woman's shoulder with its hoof.
