WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (AP) — West Valley City is ending a legal fight with a former narcotics officer who was fired after investigators reported wrongdoing by the department's drug squad.
The city filed court documents Wednesday saying it did not have evidence it needed to defend its 2013 firing of Shaun Cowley.
Cowley's attorney Lindsay Jarvis says he could be reinstated and receive back pay.
West Valley City said in a statement that it still believes firing Cowley was appropriate.
Cowley was charged last year with manslaughter in the fatal shooting of a woman during a drug investigation, but a judge dismissed the charge in October.
The department said Cowley was not fired because of the shooting but because of his actions in a drug unit that investigators say lost drugs and money and kept souvenirs from drug busts.
