SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Nine states are stepping into a lawsuit over the Utah prairie dog in favor of a ruling that animal activists say threatens to undermine the Endangered Species Act. The attorneys general asked an appeals court to uphold a ruling striking down federal protections for the Utah prairie dog on private property.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Mormon church officials say L. Tom Perry, one of the highest-ranking leaders of the faith, is headed to hospice as his cancer spreads aggressively. A church spokesman says that the 92-year-old Perry's cancer has spread to his lungs and beyond despite receiving treatment. Perry is the second-most senior member of the church's governing body.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Pleasant Grove woman convicted of killing six of her newborns and hiding their bodies in her garage will serve 49 years in prison before her first parole hearing. Utah Board of Pardons and Parole spokesman Jim Hatch says that 40-year-old Megan Huntsman has been scheduled to appear before the board in April 2064.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A Sandy man has been sentenced for conspiring with his brother to ship 239 pounds of marijuana on a single-engine plane to Rhode Island. A federal prosecutor says 38-year-old Benjamin Daniels was sentenced in Providence to 34 months in federal prison and five years of supervised release.
