HOUSTON (AP) — Houston's mayor says as many as 4,000 properties in the city have sustained "significant damage" from flooding and some 750 abandoned vehicles have been removed from roadways. Mayor Annise Parker also says two bodies were found in vehicles and a third was found in a bayou. She says three people who were on a boat that capsized during overnight rescue efforts remain missing.
BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders has kicked off his presidential bid with a pitch to liberals to join him in a "political revolution" to transform the nation's economy and politics. Sanders entered the Democratic race late last month but formally opened his White House campaign in Burlington, Vermont, today. That's where he began his political career, winning election as mayor by defeating a longtime Democratic incumbent by 10 votes.
RIO RANCHO, N.M. (AP) — Authorities say the man suspected of killing a police officer in an Albuquerque suburb had an extensive criminal record, including a manslaughter conviction. Officer Gregg Benner was at the end of his shift last night when he was gunned down during a traffic stop. The Rio Rancho police chief says the suspect was a passenger in the stopped vehicle. The 49-year-old Benner was a military veteran who had been with the Rio Rancho Police Department for four years.
CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) — The jury in the Colorado theater shooting trial has heard excerpts from a notebook in which defendant James Holmes detailed plans for the shooting. Police Detective Sgt. Matthew Fyles read a passage in which Holmes details his "obsession to kill" since he was a child and how to carry it out. But defense attorney Daniel King says Holmes wrote that he felt divided, saying his real self was fighting his biological self. Holmes sent the notebook to his psychiatrist before his 2012 movie theater attack that left 12 dead.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A cash-for-grass program is proving so popular during California's drought that a water wholesaler is considering boosting the budget for turf replacement rebates. Board members of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California are scheduled to meet today to discuss adding $350 million to its lawn rebate program. Under the program, the agency pays homeowners and businesses $2 per square foot to replace grass with drought-friendly landscaping.
