UNDATED (AP) — Stay home from work and school. That's what Harris County, Texas officials are telling residents as flash flooding is washing away vehicles and homes. Rescue crews are still searching for 12 members of two families whose vacation home was swept off its foundation in the central part of the state. Early this morning, crews also started evacuating people in Austin because of the high water. CenterPoint Energy says at one point nearly 81,000 homes and businesses were without electricity.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The city of Cleveland could announce today that it's reached a settlement with the U.S. Justice Department over its police force's use of excessive force and civil rights violations. News of a settlement comes days after a white police officer was acquitted of manslaughter for firing the final 15 rounds of a 137-shot police barrage through the windshield of a car carrying an unarmed black man and woman.
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — A Washington Post reporter is being tried in Iran on allegations of espionage. Jason Rezaian (reh-ZY'-ahn), his wife and two photojournalists were detained last year in July in Tehran. All were later released except Rezaian, who was born in the United States and spent most of his life in the U.S. The charges against Rezaian could send him to prison for up to six years. The trial is closed.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Orders to U.S. factories for long-lasting manufactured goods fell slightly in April. But orders in a category that indicates business investment posted a second increase, a hopeful sign that this key sector is starting to revive.
NEW YORK (AP) — Taco Bell and Pizza Hut say they're getting rid of artificial colors and flavors, making them the latest big food companies scrambling to distance themselves from ingredients people might find unappetizing. The company says instead of "black pepper flavor," for instance, Taco Bell will start using actual black pepper in its seasoned beef. Critics say the purging of chemicals is a response to unfounded fears over safe ingredients.
