SAN MARCOS, Texas (AP) — "It looks pretty bad out there." That's how an emergency management official in Hays County, Texas is describing the destruction in Wimberly, where weekend rains destroyed up to 400 homes. In nearby San Marcos, flooding has damaged about 300 homes. Severe weather also spawned tornadoes in the region, forcing at least 2,000 from their homes in Texas. Severe weather reportedly has left a total of three people dead in Texas and Oklahoma.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Police in Washington, D.C., say they've released four people who were detained at the same time the suspect in the slayings of a wealthy family was arrested. Police say 34-year-old Daron Wint is the only person who's been charged in the slayings of company CEO Savvas Savopoulos (SAH'-vahs sah-VAH'-puh-luhs), his wife, their 10-year-old son and their housekeeper. Police have said they believe Wint had help from others holding the Savopouloses captive inside their northwest Washington mansion for at least 18 hours.
WANG KELIAN, Malaysia (AP) — Authorities in Malaysia say they've discovered 139 suspected graves in several abandoned camps used by human traffickers on the border with Thailand. Minority Rohingya (ROH'-hin-GAH') Muslims fleeing Myanmar had been held at those camps. Malaysian police say at least 28 camps were discovered along a 30-mile stretch of the Malaysian-Thai border and forensics teams are exhuming the suspected graves to search for bodies.
CHICAGO (AP) — Many U.S. hospitals have abandoned sending breastfeeding new moms home with formula freebies. A federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study found that in 2013, just under one-third of U.S. maternity wards offered baby formula giveaways, versus nearly three-fourths in 2007. Public health efforts, such as the World Health Organization's Baby-Friendly Hospital initiative, discourage free baby formula because of health benefits that breastfeeding provides infants and their mothers.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Police in Albuquerque, New Mexico say a man and a 12-year-old boy are dead and three other boys are injured after the cherry picker they were in was thrown by a gust of wind. Police say the man and the boys were in the basket of the cherry picker, which was not secured to the ground. A witness says the wind toppled it and all five were thrown from the lift Sunday afternoon. Two of the boys, ages 10 and 7, are in critical condition.
