WIMBERLEY, Texas (AP) — Flooding overnight in Texas and Oklahoma has led to numerous evacuations and rescues including some of residents stranded on rooftops and in attics. In Hays County in Central Texas, rain caused the Blanco River to rise at a record level and forced authorities there to evacuate residents. In Oklahoma, authorities in Cleveland and Comanche counties say some of the residents they've rescued were trapped in their attics and on their roofs.
KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — A mountain river in northwestern Nepal is threatening villages along its shore with flash flooding following a landslide that blocked the waterway, creating a 1.2-mile lake in the process. Thousands of people fled villages and towns seeking higher ground. Soldiers and police officers are monitoring the river. The landslide could have been triggered by one of the many aftershocks that followed two big earthquakes.
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) — Officials say at least 10 police officers have been killed in a continuing assault by Taliban insurgents in southern Afghanistan's Helmand province. The attacks have focused on police checkpoints and three officers were taken captive. Afghan security forces have been battling the Taliban in Helmand province for almost three months.
YOLA, Nigeria (AP) — There are indications that the Boko Haram (BOH'-koh hah-RAHM') extremists in Nigeria may be running out of ammunition -- and they're resorting to hit-and-run assaults as Nigerian forces carry out an offensive against the group's last stronghold. There are reports that the extremists are slitting the throats of villagers and hacking them to death. This, as the military announces that troops have killed scores of Boko Haram fighters, and rescued 20 women and children.
CLEVELAND (AP) — Angry but mostly orderly protests followed a judge's verdict in Cleveland that found a city police officer not guilty in the deaths of two unarmed black suspects killed in a barrage of police gunfire after a car chase. Police in riot gear made numerous arrests. Michael Brelo (BREE'-loh) still faces administrative charges while remaining suspended without pay, but he no longer faces the prospect of prison.
