DUBLIN (AP) — Leaders on both sides of Ireland's same-sex marriage campaign say a referendum to change the constitution to permit the practice is on its way to approval. Ballots are still being counted today but senior figures from the "no" campaign say the only question is how large the "yes" side's margin of victory will be from yesterday's vote.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is still looking to allow the National security Agency to continue bulk collection of domestic phone records as a deadline for expiration of the Patriot Act looms May 31. McConnell has scheduled a last-minute session that day after the Senate was unable to approve a House bill yesterday that would end the practice and efforts to continue it were blocked by Kentucky Republican Rand Paul who calls such snooping illegal.

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — A Syrian official in charge of antiquities says contents of the museum of the ancient town of Palmyra are unharmed even though Islamic State fighters who hold the territory have broken in. The head of the Antiquities and Museums Department in Damascus tells The Associated Press that militants have posted their own guards. Experts suspect the group will loot the sites and sell artifacts on the black market.

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) — Myanmar's president is ignoring international objections and concerns and signing off on a law requiring some mothers to space their children three years apart. A visiting senior U.S. diplomat and rights activists worry it could be used not only to repress women, but also religious and ethnic minorities. The Population Control Health Care Bill was drafted and passed under pressure from hard-line Buddhist monks with a staunchly anti-Muslim agenda.

BEIJING (AP) — The death toll in China's latest round of flooding has risen to at least 57, including two schoolchildren aboard a bus carrying more than twice its authorized passenger load that plunged into a pond. Authorities say at least 13 other people are missing in floods that have ravaged mountain districts of six provinces and autonomous regions. Tens of thousands have fled their homes and there's major damage to buildings and crops.
