Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon (MOH'-shuh YAH'-uh-lohn) launched the three-month pilot program to segregate Israelis and Palestinians on West Bank buses following repeated complaints from Jewish settlers. Yaalon's plan sparked an angry rebuke today, with critics saying it constitutes a form of apartheid.
VIENNA (AP) — Diplomats are sounding a familiar refrain as the latest round of nuclear negotiation begins between Iran and six world powers. The experts say that progress is being made but significant gaps remain on a main document and technical annexes ahead of an end-of-June deadline. The deal aims for strict limits on Iranian nuclear capabilities in exchange for a lifting of sanctions.
TORONTO (AP) — A Canadian government official is confirming that authorities arrested 10 young people last weekend as they allegedly tried to fly out of Montreal to Iraq and Syria to join the Islamic State group. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police later issued a statement confirming that 10 young Montreal residents had been arrested at the airport. The RCMP says no charges have been brought yet in an ongoing investigation. All 10 suspects had their passports confiscated.
CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Sentencing is scheduled in New Hampshire today for a cousin of one of the world's most notorious drug lords. Jesus Gutierrez-Guzman (hay-SOOS' goo-tee-AYR'-ehz-gooz-MAHN') has pleaded guilty to planning to distribute more than 1,000 kilograms of cocaine in the United States. He faces at least 10 years in prison. He said he was a representative of Joaquin (wah-KEEN') Guzman, known as "El Chapo," in talks with undercover FBI agents.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jim Kenney is all but assured of becoming the next mayor of Philadelphia after an easy Democratic primary win. The veteran councilman credits a coalition of union members, immigrants, public school parents and others. Democrats outnumber Republicans nearly 7-1 in Philadelphia.
