ASUNCION, Paraguay (AP) — A Paraguayan judge has rejected a request for the conditional release from jail of a woman whose 10-year-old daughter is pregnant after allegedly being raped by her stepfather.
Judge Tadeo Fernandez on Tuesday ruled against release ahead of the woman's trial. The girl's mother is being held at a female prison on charges of neglecting to take care of her daughter.
The girl's stepfather was recently arrested and is being held in prison.
The case has set off a national debate in Paraguay, a poor South American nation where abortion is banned in all cases, even rape, except when a mother's life is in danger. The girl's mother has asked for an abortion for her daughter, but local health authorities have refused, saying the girl's health is not at risk.
